SHEEPGATE ACADEMY - A KIBERA VIEWPOINT

Click here to view this video

We knew Kibera was on our list, but we had no idea we would be attending to kids in the HEART of Kibera.

The poverty is plain to see. It is overwhelming.

Our gifts did not fill their stomachs, or cover their feet or backs. But, the dolls and toy cars will remind them to just be kids! Their coloring books or puzzels will tug on their imaginations, hopefully allowing them to dream. The older kids get their much needed math sets. The older girls are spoilt with much needed girlie-diaries to jot down their thoughts.

Xmas Torch hopefully sparked a smile today!

Thank you for being a part of the journey.

XMAS TORCH AT VOTS

VOTS stands for VOICES OF THE SILENCED.

A group of women set up VOTS a few years ago. Their mission was to join together and care for the children who have lost a parent or guardian, children without a voice to speak for themselves.

Click here to view this video

On this day, VOTS was anything but silence. Although we had a list to go by, there were many who were not on our list...thank God we had extra! One by one, they walked to where our boxes were stacked and one by one they got their present.

For many, this was their first toy car or black doll or math set. I honor all of you for taking part in our dream to light the hearts of these children.

Excitement at THOMAS BARNADO, 170 kids

Thomas Barnado, located in Langata, Nairobi, was our first stop. Like a someone new to a sport, Thomas Barnado, a well organized and well funded Home, helped us get our feet wet!
Regardless of how better off they are in compared to the other Homes on our list, they were still kids! Just as excited to open up a bag and discover a toy, colored pencils, coloring books, etc. The smiles were just as broad and as joyous as any other child.

Click here to view this video

It felt so good to give to these kids, knowing that this was just ONE of ELEVEN and thus just the tip of the iceberg! There was a lot more joy up ahead on this XMAS TORCH 2009 journey.

Thank you for taking part!

We need your help to meet our goals.

Xmas Torch is targeting to gift each child, from ages 2 to 23, a back pack filled with a doll/football; math set; crayons/color pencils; coloring books; pencils; pens; under garments; books; and personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc).

Good News!

Xmas Torch is officially registered! Our trustees, Lorraine Kirigia, Joseph Mwenda, Andrew Amadi and Catherine Ikiara, have declared Xmas Torch as an official entity. The orphans we gift to, children from the ages of five and up, are often the last thing most people think of on Christmas morning. Xmas Torch wants to make a difference to a few Kenyan children at Christmas. This year, we aim to gift to up to 1000 orphans and go to Meru National Park with 40 of these orphans. Each gift will have a backpack containing:
  1. doll or football
  2. story book
  3. mathematical set
  4. crayons
  5. a set of panties or underwear
  6. socks
  7. toothbrushes
  8. pads for girls menstruating
  9. sweets and chocolates
  10. tiny wallet with 100/-
So far we have three organizations with children who will be participating in our gift drive:
  • Oasis Africa (105 children)
  • Humble Heart (350 children)
  • Thomas Barnado Home (170 children)
  • Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home (40)*
We are in search of the last lucky 335! In order to get as many donors as possible to help us in our venture we are going to stand out and stand tall. Now that we are registered, we are working at getting a bank account opened and brochures printed. Our goal is to invite as many people to give to our cause as we can reach. STAY TUNED! *possibly more children involved.
